Shoot 2026-07-15-110154

We had some baby Yellow-rumped Warblers in the yard, and it was a treat to watch them hopping around clumsily and being fed. I also did a little birding up at elevation, and got a pair of long-awaited lifers: Black-backed Woodpecker, and Townsend's Solitaire.

You don't often see these birds standing on solid ground. Good photo opportunity, though it was a bit hazy.

This guy was flying in circles around me, calling. Since males of this species handle nest and nestling care, I guessed he had a nest nearby. I quickly moved on.

Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's)(Juvenile)

Yellow-rumped Warblers don't often nest at this elevation, but we had a few in the area, singing, all season. I was surprised to find a moss nest on my deck and two fledglings in the yard! I watched a while and saw the male feeding both. The little ones were in the yard a couple days and then were gone, though I'm pretty sure I heard them feeding in a neighbor's yard the following day.

I like photographing odd pairs of birds in one shot. Not a great photo but a somewhat interesting pair here.

Black-backed Woodpecker

Black-backed Woodpecker

I heard a few of these woodpeckers in the burned trees shortly after arriving, and was lucky to spot this female and get some shots. These birds are pretty much only found in burned areas, where they feed on tree-boring insects. I've heard it's unknown how they find and travel to burned areas over such large distances.

Townsend's Solitaire

Despite never having heard them before, I recognized these birds' "bell" calls right away. There were a few around calling to each other, and it was quite loud and otherworldly!

Pacific Marten

I missed focus on these shots, but I only had a couple seconds to react as it crossed the gravel road. I had been standing still and quietly for a few minutes so I guess this little guy didn't know I was there.
