On a recent trip to the east coast, I added 17 birds to my life list. Most of them were backyard/easy birds, but it was still great to finally see them and get some photos as well. Highlights include some Great Black-backed Gulls on the Atlantic coast, a Broad-winged Hawk, and a Mississippi Kite, which was a local rarity in New Hampshire. American Redstart and Yellow-throated Vireo were among my favorite nice-looking eastern birds I saw on the trip. Some other lifers were either juveniles or otherwise not in their colorful male plumage, including Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and Baltimore Oriole, but I can look forward to photographing those someday.

Downy Woodpecker

I'm about as sure as I possibly could be that this was a Downy Woodpecker, but I see there aren't any visible black spots on the outer tail feathers. I've heard of this before, and the [birdsoftheworld.org account](https://birdsoftheworld.org/bow/species/dowwoo/cur/identification#simspecies) says "Downy Woodpecker's outer rectrices are variably but usually barred black beyond the uppertail coverts (variably but usually all white in Hairy Woodpecker)".
